Two boys expelled from Catholic high school in Boston after taking ‘upskirt’ photos of female teachers
An $18,000-a-year Catholic high school has expelled two boys over accusations they were taking photos up the skirts of women teachers.
The two pupils at the prestigious Boston College High School were expelled over separate incidents, but they have prompted soul searching at the all-boys institution over how to protect female staff.
Now students are to be required to keep their mobile phones in their lockers during lesson time to head off the chances that such incidents will be repeated.
Luigi Aieta, a student said ‘It’s very tragic especially for the female faculty, it reflects our school in a very negative way.’
The first incident was revealed in late October, when the school’s headteacher emailed parents to tell them a pupil had ‘had surreptitiously photographed members of the female faculty and staff in a most inappropriate manner.’
Stephen Hughes went on: ‘Once discovered, the faculty was informed, an accountability board was convened, and the student was separated from the school.’
It was after an assembly to discuss the matter with pupils that boy came forward to squeal on a second surreptitious upskirt snapper. That pupil was also expelled.
Pupils at Boston College High confirmed that such behaviour was ‘not uncommon’ at the school.
‘According to students, those incidents sometimes involve a young man taking a candid photo of a female staffer or teacher without her knowledge,’
‘In other cases, the photos can be more graphic, including so-called “upskirting” pictures in which a camera is slipped under a woman’s dress or skirt.’ with the intent of capturing her panty clad crotch or bottom.
School officials say new rules mean pupils must keep their mobile phones in lockers during class. A spokesman for the school said: ‘Like everyone dedicated to the nurturance of young people, BC High is vigilant about our students’ access to the internet and the potential damage to anyone’s privacy in the use of electronic devices.
‘Without commenting on specific events in order to insure the privacy of our families, periodically BC High, like all schools, has to take disciplinary measures and adjust our procedures to protect our community members.’
